After a short stint over at Gold Coast, it had just come to my attention that each state in Australia had it's own pet name. Like Victoria is known as the Garden State with it's abundance of parks (yes, a very lovely thing in autumn and spring) and Queensland is hailed as the Sunshine State. Then I got to wondering if our very own Malayisan states had names like that. Well, yeah I'm well aware of Selangor being the 'abode of sincerity' thanks to the wonders of Wikipedia, hahaha shame on me-

*takes a moment to stop ferrets from dragging plastic bags behind the couch.*

Ok where was I. Yes. Selangor. Abode of Sincerity. While it does have a nice ring to it, I was wondering if there were any pet names for certain states of Malaysia that really brought out the 'essence' of that particular place. In other words, less high and mighty and following the nilai-nilai moral, more local. Because if we're able to identify each state by their unique aspects, surely we'd love them that much more. Also it'll be nifiter when suggesting a destination for your foreign mates to head to. :D

I'd certainly classify Penang as 'The Food State', though many Ipoh people would protest to this. Yes, Ipoh is great with food and all, Malacca too! but I'd prefer to call your place 'The Retirement State' and 'The Historical State' respectively :P Malacca and history, cannot escape la unless you guys out there might be able to think of something more fitting?

Below is a list of all the states and their extended names, just so i don't forget them again and a name that i think suits the place. All in good fun people, all in good fun.

Johor Darul Ta'azim (The Abode of Dignity)
Kedah Darul Aman (The Abode of Peace)
Kelantan Darul Naim (The Beautiful Abode)
Pahang Darul Makmur (Abode of Tranquility)
Perak Darul Ridzuan (The Land of Grace)
Selangor Darul Ehsan (Abode of Sincerity)
Terengganu Darul Iman (Abode of Faith)
Negeri Sembilan Darul Khusus (The Special Abode)
Perlis Darul Sunnah previously was Indera Kayangan. Holy hell, I never knew they changed!
Malacca Negeri Bersejarah (The Historical State)
Pulau Pinang (eh no extended name?)
Sabah Negeri di Bawah Bayu (Land Under the Wind)
Sarawak Bumi Kenyalang (Land of the Hornbills)

...Don't give me that look. I bet you can't remember the extended names of all our Malaysian states too. ;p So spill it people, what nickname would you fit to the states above?

On another note, I'm so proud to know that the TOA gang has an international network of sorts made of The Aussies, The Brits, The Kiwis, The Locals and The American. I say the American because Kenny Chan is the only one who's heading to Miami. Hee. So cool yah?
